ADELAIDE police plan to breath test thousands of drivers in a new blitz on drink driving.More than 140 officers will be involved in the crackdown to be launched tonight.
In a recent similar exercise, police tested almost 12,000 drivers over a two-day period and booked more than 130 people for drink driving.
"Some of those readings detected drivers with nearly six times the legal limit driving on the road," Superintendent Graham Lough, officer in charge of the Traffic Support Branch, said.
"This is totally unacceptable and a major risk to all motorists."
Supt Lough said so far this year alcohol was a factor in 20 fatalities on South Australian roads.
While the blitz tonight would not specifically target young driver, he said statistics showed drivers aged between 16 and 24 were overrepresented in the number alcohol-related road deaths.
"All drivers need to make a choice now to avoid the risks associated with drink driving or risk the change of loosing their licence or worse, their life," Supt Lough said.
A police spokeswoman said the duration of the blitz had yet to be determined.
