Staying Alert, Staying Alive

We all know not to hold our cell phones while driving. That’s is a dangerous distraction. But, how safe is it to use a hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle? Even with a hands-free device, it is still necessary to look at the phone in order to dial it. That means you are not looking at the road ahead. Besides that, the very act of speaking on a phone is distracting. It is difficult for some people to concentrate on a phone conversation and think about their driving at the same time.

If you want to drive safely, and you certainly should, it is necessary to devote 100% of your attention to….driving. That brings up an interesting question: How many other distracting activities do drivers engage in as they are moving down the road? Have you ever seen drivers doing any of the following: eating or drinking, looking down at a radio or CD player, concentrating on written directions or looking at a map or a GPS? How about turning to talk to or argue with passengers or looking out side windows, enjoying the scenery?

Each and every one of those activities could lead to enough inattention to result in an accident.

This is just one valuable driving tip that you can learn by attending a defensive driving class. These types of courses are easy and they are fun! You could even take an enjoyable defensive driving course online.

I am famous for driving with my cell phone in hand. Actually I think I am a pretty good driver with a cell phone. Although, many many people cannot focus and do two things at once and for them I say... hang up the phone and take an online driving course. Keep safe.
