Getting Directions
An important part of defensive driving is knowing where you’re going. Uncertainty about how to reach your destination can result in sudden turns, a lot of looking around (instead of keeping your eyes on the road), and even the possibility of running out of gas.
It’s best to know the route to where you’re going before you ever get into your vehicle. However, if you have to ask for directions, don’t be ashamed—but do act wisely. Here are some tips.
Use a professional source if possible
If you have a cell phone (and you should, if you’re going to be driving) and happen to be in a bigger city, there will probably be a number you can call for directions or roadside assistance. These numbers are often posted along highways and may be something like *55, *399, etc.
You can also dial 411 and ask who to contact for directions in the area you’re in. A good resource is the State Police.
Asking in person
Gas stations or convenience centers can be good, as can hotels. However, you should be careful to avoid seedy-looking areas. Also, try to get step-by-step directions that you can write down, drawing a map if necessary. Make sure the directions are clear before you finish talking.
