Handling the Tracks
Of course defensive driving consists of more than just rules and regs. Sometimes it's just a matter of common sense (which, unfortunately, may not be common to every driver), such as what to do when you encounter railroad tracks. Here are some things to consider when you happen to face railroad tracks.
First, if there's a train coming and the RR lights are flashing, even if the arm hasn't dropped, you should stop. Common sense? One would think so. Yet, accidents have occurred from drivers trying to beat the train. Don't become a statistic in the attempt to shave a few minutes off your driving time.
Second, if there's no train, slow down when you approach and go over the tracks. Not doing so can cause damage to your car, and may even result in your losing control.
Finally, even if you don't see any lights or hear anything, look around anyway. Once in a great while there may be a small railcar going on the track, without any lights or noise to alert drivers.
